Key Insights

  • Incorporated new firewater piping tie-ins to existing loops
  • Completed deep excavations and shoring systems
  • Assisted in commissioning support with client

This firewater system revamp in South Texas placed focus around debottlenecking and alleviating hydraulic issues to add flow capacity. This was achieved by providing new tie-ins and pumps. The scope of work included all civil, structural, mechanical, process, piping, electrical, and instrumentation required to complete the project.

The Problem

Our client required a full upgrade of their existing terminal demand for the firewater system to correct deficiencies.

In addition to ensuring the new system was up to code, the H+M team also needed to collaborate with the Houston Pilots and the Port of Houston Fire Department to safely locate the structure during the design phase.

The outcomes of the South Texas firewater system revamp included the following:

  • New firewater piping tie-ins to existing loop: 1,100’ of HDPE (SDR-9: 20”, 16”, & 8”); 200’ of A/G CS
  • New firewater piping tie-ins to existing loop: 200’ of HDPE (SDR-9: 20” & 16”); 200’ of A/G CS
  • New firewater piping tie-ins to existing loop: 900’ of HDPE (SDR-9: 16” & 8”); 600’ of A/G CS
  • Deep excavations and shoring systems for tie-ins (12’)
  • Four new fire pumps, with the flow and level control taking suction from a repurposed existing tank
  • Two new vertical fire pumps installed on a pile-supported structure in the Houston Ship Channel
  • MV pole tie-in to feed a new transformer and switch rack for the electric motors
  • Commissioning of pumps with vendor support

Project Comments

“This project was critical for the client to revamp their entire firewater protection system to meet their internal company standards. H+M was the right company to execute this project to be able to design and construct the modification in stages with limited interruptions to the client’s ongoing operations.”
